I hate to give it such a low rating because we had done so well in the past but things change. I've been affiliated with Matson Auto quite awhile and I'm sure this going to upset some of his long time customers, but he's got some shady characters working for him. I believe he is personally honest, but. As soon as I got in the vehicle to test drive it with a mechanic employee he started naming off different issues based on what I told Jim.
He went on and on. So I leave it, they fix the problem, but I'm told that I need to replace a major part in addition and quoted a very high price, and all of some wiring. So I order the part on eBay go back to have it repaired only to be told that he can't do it. He has to order it from his people it's some new rule. And it should be easy to find someone else to do it.
I'm on a fixed income so I would pay double to have him order and charge for labor. So I find another shop and they were happy to do it and way less expensive than he would charge. Plus all those wires were fine except one! I think Jim is getting up there in age and can't double check on those guys. And what weirded me out the most was all the side glances and shifty eyed looks I was getting from them, as if they were up to something.
To save my life I can't figure out how they could benifits from lying unless they're getting some kind of commission. I hope it works out for the better in the future but I won't be going back ever!

I've been going to Jim for years because he and his team are very honest and very skilled. He's the only mechanic I'll ever use in LA, except for when he sends me a specialist for something specific. And by the way, all the specialists he's referred me to over the years are also top notch. I've never had a problem with any of them.

I went to Jim Matson Auto last week to have my 2001 Honda Accord breaks checked, among a list of other imperative services. Jim and Danny were both wonderful to work with and were kind enough to discuss the repair terms I didn't understand with my father over the phone (who doesn't live in California). My car was in and out in one day and is now running better than the day I bought her. I will be back for all of my automotive needs and would highly recommend their business.

Took my Car here! My first time taking my car that I bought to a mechanic. I was told I needed 4 things done when I got a oil change. a rip off jiffy lube. This place checked all the fluids in my car and all the things that were supposedly wrong with it. To find it only needed 1 of the services. I was very happy with the honesty! Its so hard to find a honest and not expensive place to go for car maintenance.
I will be taking my car here for as long as I am in LA. Danny was very friendly, understanding and explained things in a way in which I who know nothing about cars could understand. Thumbs up!

I was recommended to this shop by my friend. After reading some of these reviews I honestly am surprised and disappointed with Jim Matson Automotive shop. I brought in my first car for repair, they never mention the labor costs, they had to replace one switch and charged me almost double the cost of the part just for labor alone. They never called to inform how much it will be.
I had a second vehicle for them to "Inspect" for problems. After the first surprise I asked how much it would be in full. They quoted me a price for the full inspection. After the inspection was done, the bill was nearly doubled from original quote. They made repairs that I never authorized and gave me back my money after I came back and demanded it. Moral of the story, double check all prices for parts/labor. Know what you are getting yourself into.

Every time I think all mechanics are the same I come crawling back to Jim. He's honest and knowledgeable. Let me give an example of what I'm dealing with: a bring an old Camry into a (AAA!) Toyota dealership who generates a list of repairs that HAVE to be done. Several thousand dollars worth. Jim looks through the list and says, "you should probably do this today.
This item could wait for months. This item can wait even longer." Years later (not having made most of those repairs) Jim went through the car and found a bunch of stuff, adding up to a couple thousands of dollars. Jim said, "you could put the money into this car but I can't guarantee that you'll end up with a good running car. This car is simply winding down." We bit the bullet and bought a new car. I just wished he was closer to me!

I was referred to Jim Matson by my usual mechanic when he didn't have the equipment to complete a job for my vehicle. I'm happy (and sad) to say that Jim Matson is, without a doubt, my new usual mechanic. I brought in my 2007 Civic Hybrid for a wheel bearing replacement and an issue with my horn (it sucks not having a horn when you drive in LA). Jim got the job done on time and for less than he estimated. Seriously.
What kind of mechanic quotes you a price that you agree to, and then hands you back some money at the end and says "it didn't take as long as we thought"? The best kind of mechanic. :)
