Hill Auto is the only place you should bring your car. David is honest and will tell you exactly what you need. I am a single woman in DC and the first time I brought my car to David - my check engine light was on. I dropped off my car and headed back to the office. He called me about 20 mins later to tell me my gas cap was loose and to come get the car. Since that day, he is the only person who works on my car. He has helped by buy new cars and helps me when anything goes wrong.

I've been taking my 2010 Rav4 here for years. For some reason, I went to the dealer for my last service. They quoted me $3,550 for repairs and maintenance. I was floored. I went back to Hill Auto with the quote and the explanation of what the dealer said needed to be repaired. After looking at the car, it turned out that almost 75% of the things the dealer wanted to repair or replace weren't in need of the service.
Even when I asked if he checked one of the items that seemed most concerning. he said there was no way he would replace that and charge me for something that wasn't even close to being in need of repair. I appreciate honesty and fairness and you get that at Hill Auto.

I've waited awhile to write a review, hoping the owner would make things right as he had previously provided decent service. Disappointingly, that has not happened. My daughter took her car here for a number of years but her last interaction was so duplicitous that she will NEVER return. I would strongly advise anyone else to do the same. Not trustworthy or honest brokers. Very disappointing.

Hill has become a consistent provider of excellent service over the last year or so; multiple oil changes done quickly and correctly, plus some additional work done at a much more competitive rate than what we get quoted for at the Honda dealership. We particularly appreciate the fact that after every visit, Hill gives a clear, itemized breakdown of what needs to be done immediately and what can wait a few months or a year (again, in contrast to dealerships where everything is treated as dire).

I've been going to Hill Auto Repair for about 18 years. As a single woman living in the city, I needed a reliable, honest mechanic. A friend recommended David to me back in early 2001 and I've been going to him ever since. David the owner has always given me a fair price and returns my car back in a reasonable time frame (often same day turnaround).
We have established a very good rapport and I trust him. He is quick to provide a diagnosis and when the dealership would say I need something done, David would tell me I could wait a few months or not. The dealer would quote one price and David would quote a price about a 1/3 of the dealership. When I had to get rid of a car, he was completely transparent with me and told me he didn't want to continue to take my money to fix a car he believed was dead (which my father agreed).
He told me what car to purchase next and he told me he would see me when my warranty on my new car had expired. I couldn't be more pleased with David, Sam and the Hill Auto Repair staff.he knows my voice when I call and I've recommended him to many.

Their service was so bad it finally motivated me to sign up for a Yelp account just to write a review. Unless you are super in to overpaying for crappy service with a large side of attitude, I'd recommend heading somewhere else for service. Should have known when the back alley repair shop was simultaneously advertising used car sales that these guys were sketchy. Instead it took me several hundred dollars to learn! But now I know: go elsewhere!

Stay away. The owner, David, was very unprofessional to the point of being verbally abusive after we discovered his shady billing procedures and had the audacity to push back. I'm not sure I've ever experienced such poor or dishonest service. Which says a lot for the auto repair industry. I was told one price and charged another at payment time, I was also told the amount I paid for diagnostic testing (charges which were not disclosed prior to incurring the cost) would be deducted from my final bill, but then told they don't apply, and on top of it all, when I had the audacity to mention these inconsistencies, David, the owner's response was "I've been in business over 30 years and received many awards, so if you have a problem, that's your problem." I have taken my car here a number of times in the past, but will never do it again after such unprofessional and downright crooked behavior.
In reference to the response provided by the business below, I would say: Number one, I'm not sure why you think it's relevant to make a reference my mother, but that's weird and mildly creepy. Further evidence of your inability to keep things purely professional. Number two, I'm not "frustrated with my vehicle, " I'm frustrated with duplicitous billing practices and unprofessional behavior.
I have no idea what any of the random recollections with regard to previous service or a fictitious person named John Cooper have to do with the central issue, which is a business that feels perfectly fine offering a credit and then reneging on that once the bill comes.

Terrible Price. Terrible Service. They charged almost $900 for a basic tune up that another shop would do for around $250. Shop said that the tune up would be done in a day or two but it took over a week. The shop said that the car was fixed, but it still has problems that the tune up did not fix. Staff is friendly and courteous but I feel like they lied to me about the condition of my car.

I visited D.C. From July 7-12, 2017. It was crazy hot during our stay. 90s with high humidity every day. I say this because on the drive down, my AC unit quit working and I felt desperate to get it repaired before returning home. Fortunately, we used the Metro during our stay. I called Hill on a Friday and was told they could see me Monday morning.
The gentleman took the time to explain what was probably wrong with the car which made me feel better about taking my car to an unknown place. I arrived on Monday at 830 AM. I dropped it off, and at 10 AM they called to say they'd found the leak and that I also needed an oil change. At 1130 AM, the car was finished. The bill was only $205! I couldnt have been more pleased with the service, attentiveness and excellent work. The garage is located within a mile of a metro station and is in a residential neighborhood. It was easy to find.

I brought my car in to see if they could change a tail light that had gone out. It is a bit complicated with having to remove the reflector and the bulb is not standard size. I was surprised that as soon as I pulled in, a mechanic got to work. They had the bulb, and he was able to replace it within five minutes. I expected that it would take much longer and was very pleasantly surprised with the excellent service. What a hidden gem in our neighborhood. I know where to go the next time the car needs service.

Have been using Hill Auto since arriving in DC last year. Ran into car trouble soon after arriving, and Hill Auto took care of some urgent repairs, and have been my choice for all issues large and small since. Great team, super convenient location if you live on the hill, and fair price for the city. Will be using them as long as I'm in DC!

I just moved away from DC, but want to give compliments to my mechanic for the past five years. David and his staff at Hill Auto were always honest with me, always fit me in right away, and did good work. They're definitely a little expensive, which is the only reason I give them four stars instead of five, but it's an expensive neighborhood so that's almost to be expected.
Living nearby, I found their prices to be worth the convenience and honesty. I know at least one other person who lives on the Hill and has been using Hill Auto for years and years, and she swears by them even more than I do. Only once in five years of oil changes and miscellaneous repairs did they ever not do the job right (misidentifying a rattling metallic noise in my engine), but they got it right when I brought it in a second time and counted the cost of the first job towards the second. If I ever return to DC, which is certainly possible, I'll definitely go back to David and Hill Auto.

Hill Auto Repair has a great mechanic. They are honest, patient, and professional. In December I had an emergency with my car. I was driving from a mechanic to mechanic and each one of them was referring me to a dealer. I came to Hill Auto Repair and they right on the spot knew what was wrong with my car. They in detail explained to me what was wrong.
Over the few days when I was traveling the owner was updating me with the repair. I happy to admit that even once I haven't felt that I was taken advantage of because I'm a female. I recommend this place and defiantly I will be back at least once a year for a check-up.

I have used these guys twice now. They are friendly and accommodating. The first time was pretty standard for oil change and break inspection. They found some other issues and told me I could choose to address them now or not, warned me of the price, and let me decide what they did. Fair and QUICK! Same day service! The second time I, like Ruby G., needed help clearing my car for inspection.
It had several issues which were SUPER EXPENSIVE. However, I really needed the car to pass and didn't have time to shop around or try to do any band-aid type work. I needed the real deal. Well, again SAME DAY SERVICE. They even offered to have me come back before I head to the DMV and they'd make sure it would pass. Well the check engine light came back on within a few days.
They happily took the car over night, checked the computer several times and made even more repairs. The best part, he didn't charge me! He understood it should've been handled the first time, realized I already paid an arm and a leg and that I was desperate. Well it worked, passed the DMV tests the next day and got to carry on with my life. Great folks here!
