I have a 3YM20 Yanmar diesel engine in my 31' Contest sailboat which has been in my family for over 35 years. We had it on the Chesapeake Bay recently when one of its piston rods broke and destroyed the engine wall. We were just very lucky that it didn't happen during a storm when it could have been fatal. The engine was like new with less than 1,000 of its 3,000 warranty hours of use; however, it had been 5 years and 3 months since it's installation which was 3 months beyond calendar date warranty so Yanmar didn't want to discuss the problem at all.
In fact, they were not even interested in researching what may have caused the failure and how re-engineering may improve the safety of this engine. They suggested, if I was concerned, I could take detailed pictures and send them in for their review (at my cost). I am 73 years old and I have been driving cars and sailing boats all my life and never had an engine failure as serious as this. and never had a supplier so disinterested.
